My Culture: Japanese/Okinawan

I am half Japanese and half American. My mom's family is from the island of Okinawa in Japan. It is a very unique island with a very rich cultural background. I am very involved in this side, as I go and I see them as often as possible over the summers and stay in contact with them. Family is a very big thing for me. And my Okinawan roots are also very important to me. I speak Japanese and am in the process of learning to read and write it, but I spent a lot of my free time looking into the history of Okinawa. I learned a lot and really became more connected with the island and my background. Below I've included a couple images of me and family just enjoying each others company.

All the grand kids with grandparents. We all went out to a Japanese barbecue house
Me, my 2 male cousins, and my two uncles. All representing the U of A

A beach in Okinawa. Okinawa is known for it's tropical weather and beautiful blue waters. It is the only tropical island in Japan. Originally known as the Ryukyu kingdom, it was absorbed and became a prefecture of Japan around the time of the Meiji Restoration.

Me and 3 of my cousins. We were exploring a street in Naha (the capital city of Okinawa) that is known as the pottery road, because it is lined with many stores that create traditional Okinawan and Japanese ceramics.

Me and my cousins swimming and exploring the gorgeous oceans of Okinawa! Despite it being a tropical island, only tourists and children seem to go to the beaches. Most of the locals usually only come out to the beach once or twice a year.
